LG Household & Healthcare launching world¡¯s first refrigerated 5¡É skincare, ¡°FROSTINE¡±

Date 2012.04.03

LG Household & Healthcare (CEO Suk Yong Cha) launches FROSTINE, containing zero harmful substances and no preservatives, with its independent temperature technology to deliver beneficial ingredients of Antarctic lichen to the skin.

FROSTINE, originating from the word, ¡°frost,¡± to deliver the meaning of world¡¯s first ICEMETIC, or refrigerated cosmetic.

To introduce FROSTINE, the first refrigerated cosmetic created with strong antioxidants extracted from Antarctic lichen, LG Household & Healthcare made an active investment over the past two years by building the system tailored to low-temperature production and distribution such as a separate clean room facility to prevent contamination and refrigeration packaging.

As a result, LG Household & Healthcare opens a new area with FROSTINE, the refrigerated cosmetic with no harmful substances, which is first of its kind in Korea and the world.

[Development background- with zero harmful substances and no preservatives! ]

In an effort to lead Korea¡¯s already saturated cosmetic market, LG Household & Healthcare developed ICEMETIC, or refrigerated cosmetic, to offer a low-temperature environment where ingredients in the product will survive without preservatives.

Before, benefits of such cosmetics couldn¡¯t be delivered to skin because their ingredients are decomposed or changed by heat, light, and oxygen.

FROSTINE is completely free of preservatives and other substances designed for that purpose, and no harmful materials (such as preservatives and pseudo-preservatives, artificial perfumes, coloring, toxic materials, or heavy metals) are inserted into the products during production. The product has passed the preservative test, heavy metal test, and skin test and is verified as a non-preservative cosmetic.

[Finding the solution in ¡°Ramalin,¡± a novel nontoxic compound from Antarctic lichen]
LG Household & Healthcare signed an MOU with the Korea Polar Research Institute to develop a new cosmetic material last April and has turned its attention to a nontoxic antioxidant called Ramalin (Patent No. 10-1025612).

Plants in the Antarctic are found 2,500m below sea level, live in extreme cold, dry and barren conditions (–100¡É) and have a slow growth rate of 1cm every 100 years. Antarctic lichen Ramalina can produce a bud in these extreme conditions and maintain life on the rock by creating strong antioxidants to be protected from strong ultraviolet rays.

Ramalin, obtained from Ramalina, is superior in eliminating simulative agents causing oxidation but had never been utilized in cosmetics because it is vulnerable to temperature, humidity, light, and oxygen.

Being the first refrigerated cosmetic, FROSTINE contains Ramalin thanks to the low-temperature technology, promising superior anti-aging and antioxidant effects, and will gather huge popularity in the market.

[Refrigerator treatment, why is it a refrigerated cosmetic? ]
ICEMETIC or ¡°refrigerated cosmetic¡± is the optimized method to deliver highly effective ingredients that are activated at a low temperature. With the environment of low temperature (3-7¡É), strong anti-oxidants vulnerable to heat and oxygen are well protected and then better absorbed to the skin when the skin temperature is lowered and restored.

In addition, the product utilizes refrigerator treatment, the mechanism increasing the moisturizing ability of the skin itself when the temperature drops. For that, ingredients in the product together with its dosage form improve the tone and vitality of skin.

A specially designed contamination-proof container helps protect anti-oxidant ingredients in the cosmetic, and its distribution is also conducted under a refrigerated condition.

Customers are required to press the ¡°Timestrip¡± button attached to the container when they open it, to activate its graph. The graph senses temperature and passage of time to indicate the six-week usage period.

As for the container, an airless pump sealing the product completely and double protection cap are introduced. In addition, the design is appropriate for an ordinary refrigerator (average temperature of 3-7¡É) other than a cosmetic fridge (average temperature of 10¡É) and it includes a special case to be protected from food odors and other items in the fridge.

During distribution and delivery, refrigeration packaging is utilized to maintain product temperature at 10¡É or less for 30 hours.

FROSTINE becomes available at department stores and offline shops in Seoul, Korea, at the end of May, and customers can purchase it or have it delivered to their homes from the department stores.
